West Shore Elementary School Case Study

The Challenge:

The well water supplying West Shore Elementary school contains 33 µg/l (ppb) of naturally occurring arsenic. This is more than three times the level allowed by the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Act, but not uncommon for ground waters throughout the US.

The school had an initial arsenic treatment system installed in 2008. That system required chemical injection, 3 tanks each containing 32 cubic feet of media, a 500 gal backwash tank and the onsite storage of arsenic waste until it could be removed for disposal. The operation of this treatment system was labor intensive. Daily service of more than an hour was required to start up the system each morning.

In the late spring of 2014, the arsenic concentration of the effluent water from the school's treatment system was beginning to approach the 10 ppb arsenic limit. Interested in exploring their options for replacing this treatment system, the school operations staff contacted Douglas Water Conditioning in Fenton, Michigan.

The Solution:

After performing an onsite evaluation of the school's current treatment system and available footprint, Ron Steward, VP of Douglas Water Conditioning, consulted with Nichole Pennisi, MetSorb® Technical Sales Manager at Graver Technologies, regarding the possibility of using MetSorb® HMRG for this arsenic reduction need.

A full water chemistry analysis was obtained and reviewed by Ron and Nichole. It was determined that twin 150,000 grain softeners followed by 2 ARF-361-C-S-VIP 1 arsenic reduction filters containing MetSorb® HMRG, all provided by EcoWater Commercial Industrial (ECI), would be ideal for solving the water treatment needs of the school. The softeners would remove the soluble iron and hardness present in the water which was not treated with the original system. The superior kinetics of the MetSorb® HMRG would allow for reducing the treatment media volume from 96 to 40 cubic feet to process the 50-100 gpm flow rate. The MetSorb® HMRG irreversibly adsorbs arsenic, eliminating the need to store the arsenic/iron solids frequently backwashed out of the original treatment system. ECI's VIP-1 programmable controllers for softener regeneration and MetSorb® HMRG monthly backwash cycles would considerably reduce the amount of time the school's staff and contracted water systems operator would need to spend operating and monitoring the arsenic reduction treatment process.

After a review by state and local regulators, the new system was readily approved!

The Results:

The arsenic concentration in the school's drinking water has been analyzed and is now lower  than the limit of detection for this testing, <2 ppb.
